Sand Dredging Bucket Liner - Matrox

In demanding mining and dredging operations, bucket liners are exposed to constant abrasion, impact, and material build-up. Traditional polyurethane (PU) liners are commonly used in these applications due to their toughness; however, many operations still experience premature wear and material hang-up, particularly in aggressive wet-slurry and abrasive environments.

To improve wear life and operational performance, a major mining operation replaced polyurethane flip-out liners with Polystone® Matrox bucket liners in a dredger bucket application. Installed to protect the steel substrate of the bucket, the liners were required to withstand continuous exposure to highly abrasive material while also improving flow and reducing carry-back.

One of the key challenges in dredging environments is material hang-up inside the bucket. Wet and abrasive material can adhere to the liner surface, reducing efficiency due to carry-back, increasing cleaning requirements, and placing additional strain on equipment. While polyurethane provides impact resistance, it can still suffer from wear and increased drag in high-abrasion applications over time.

Polystone® Matrox® which is formulated with a release agent (not used in other grades of UHMWPE) provided a significant improvement due to its exceptionally low coefficient of friction, release characteristics and outstanding abrasion resistance. The low-friction surface helped minimise material build-up inside the bucket, improving discharge efficiency and reducing hang-up, while the material’s wear resistance enabled it to outperform the existing polyurethane liners in service life.

The operation originally expected approximately one year of service life from the liner system. In practice, the Matrox® liners remained operational for almost two years in the harsh dredging environment — nearly doubling the expected wear life while continuing to protect the underlying steel bucket structure.

For mining and bulk material handling operations, the application demonstrates the long-term value of Polystone® Matrox bucket liners in severe wear environments. Compared with polyurethane, Matrox® offers:

  • Excellent abrasion resistance in sliding wear applications
  • Reduced material hang-up and improved flow characteristics
  • Lower friction for improved discharge performance
  • Extended service life in harsh operating conditions
  • Reduced maintenance frequency and downtime
  • Protection of expensive steel substrates from premature wear

This application highlights the growing use of engineered Matrox wear liners in mining and dredging operations where reducing downtime, increasing liner life, and improving material flow are critical to operational efficiency.
